On set, Austin Hopkins and I agreed that we would try something different – a voiceover from the perspective of an old vintage truck. Being dutiful acolytes of AI, we plugged the prompt into ChatGPT, and it spat out beautiful, grandiose prose. It sounded like Dylan Thomas on steroids.
We both agreed that the writing was good, but it didn't sound human. So, I went at the script with pen and paper (notes app on my phone) to write something from the heart. All of the experiences I had on set, like the car breaking down on the last shot of the day, stories of Cody's upbringing, and my own memories of my grandfather, made it into the final VO.
I used another AI tool, ElevenLabs, to create a stand-in voice (e.g. contemplative cowboy) to create a model of what a truck might sound like. Hearing the voice out loud allowed me to adjust the script on-demand. When we were finally ready, we hired a voice actor.
So, I think I got a view of how AI could integrate into the creative process? Or at least how we all hope it will? Call me cautiously optimistic that humans will continue to do human things and AI will give you the power to experiment.
That being said, it's early.

"It’s been awhile since we’ve spent so much time together. For a brief moment there, I thought maybe it was the end. I’m just glad you weren’t ready to throw in the towel on me just yet.
I wish your grandfather could see you today. Me and him had some good times together. He would be proud of this place and all the work you put in. He loved nothing more than family.
Look, I know I’m old, but I ain’t dead yet. Sure, there might be the occasional breakdown, but sometimes it's good to get your hands dirty and know that whatever obstacles come your way, the best never rest."
